La dilatación es el efecto que experimenta un sólido cuando se incrementa su temperatura, puede ser expansión lineal, superficial y volumétrica. Sirve para medir la dilatación en un sólido, cuando se le aplica calor al tubo este experimenta la dilatación. El aparato de expansión lineal seria otra versión del aparato de Cowan.
